Yayoi Kusama

by Robert Shore

Our Review:

Yayoi Kusama, a renowned living artist from Japan, has had her artist life of over four decades covered in the book, from her surprising takes in various art scenes across countries, to her art recovery journey through Kusama’s polka dot and iconic pumpkin paintings and installations. Written by Robert Shore, the former deputy director of Art Review magazine, it is an interesting read for those who are passionate about the artist’s work.

How to travel

by The School of Life

Our Review: This book combines a collection of twenty short writings on the philosophy and art of travelling. It explores and gives practical insights on various topics, such as why travelling is sometimes less relaxing or even more stressful than we expect, how to maintain the sensitivity and curiosity for our surroundings even when we are back home, and how to cherish the memories and make the most out of each journey.

Self-Help

Think Again

by Adam Grant

Our Review: Rather than having a static, one-off view of learning concepts, the New York Times bestselling author Adam Grant suggests that we adopt the idea of learning, unlearning and relearning. It is particularly valuable in the fast-food culture where people and things are often skimmed over and judged without a further thought. We can explore ways to think and rethink our personal lives and life decisions.

The Let Them Theory

by Mel Robbins

Our Review: In life, we often give too much power to other people. We overthink, feel frustrated, or overwhelmed from others’ actions, words, and opinions. This book teaches a simple but mighty theory in two words: let them. It is time to take the power back into our hands and cease to waste energy on what we cannot control. We can learn through this theory to focus on our happiness, our goals, and our lives.

Maybe You Should

Talk to Someone

by Lori Gottlieb

Our Review: Unlike the typical self-help books that are filled with either numerous research findings or sentimental quotes, this book - a memoir of a psychotherapist based in Los Angeles - offers us a humorous glimpse into the world of therapy. It explores the minds of Gottlieb’s patients, as well as Gottlieb herself. With stories which are highly relatable to our everyday lives, the author gives us transformative insights on how to cope with critical life events.

Book - Rain by Hsu-Kung Liu, Photo via Books.com

Rain

by Hsu-Kung Liu (劉旭恭)

Our Review: Rain (雨) is a book about the gratefulness and resilience of a monk stemming from childhood to adulthood, in perceiving “rain” across different life stages, and how he stays calm amongst the chaos and difficult times. A children’s book by Hsu-Kung Liu (劉旭恭), a Taiwanese writer and illustrator, with intimate ink paintings to go along with his Chinese calligraphy. Certainly an inspiring and colourful read!

Novels

Book - The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde, Photo by Little Stories

The Picture of Dorian

Gray

by Oscar Wilde

Our Review: A literary classic first published in 1890 detailing the story of Dorian Gray - his innocence, his corruption, and a portrait that bears the traces of the sins he commits while he remains physically unchanged and pure in the eyes of polite society. An exquisite work which is actually an investigation into the human soul, Wilde tells the story of Dorian Gray through excellent writing and powerful use of language. It certainly didn’t disappoint.

Book - Intermezzo by Sally Rooney, Photo by Little Stories

Intermezzo

by Sally Rooney

Our Review: It is always a pleasure to read one of Sally Rooney’s books, in fact, two of her works have been adapted into TV shows. Sally Rooney’s writing is spare, realistic prose, unique but flattering - setting her apart from many other contemporary fiction writers of the 21st century. Intermezzo is a complex story about familial and romantic dynamics, interwoven with themes of grief and friendship. The story is about two brothers who have little in common, how they deal with grief, and the people they love.

In this modern age of quick content and digital distractions, a good book is sure to nourish the mind and the soul. Our team here at Little Stories encourages all our blog readers to take some time out of their day and flip through a few pages - take a breath of fresh air and take a break from all those screens. Rediscover the joy of literature and let your imagination roam free.

(Sally Rooney)
