In our latest diversity interviews in preparation for our Hong Kong Arts Centre exhibition, we spoke to three dynamic leaders: Alan Lang from Gay Games Hong Kong, Marc Guyon from Club France International, and Patricia Hui, a passionate advocate for diversity. Their perspectives highlight the importance of diversity and inclusion, particularly within the realms of sports, the arts, and social advocacy.
Defining Diversity
Alan Lang's Perspective - Taking Action
Alan describes diversity as “understanding everyone’s different backgrounds, experiences, and expectations”. He emphasizes that true diversity goes beyond mere acknowledgment; it requires actively seeking out and valuing differences. Through his work with Gay Games Hong Kong, he champions the importance of unity within the LGBTQ+ community, especially in light of recent challenges to rights and visibility.
Marc Guyon's Perspective - Community Engagement
Marc articulates that diversity is the foundation of Club France International, which promotes French culture in an international environment like Hong Kong. He underscores that their organization “welcomes individuals from all backgrounds—regardless of profession, age, gender, or beliefs”. This inclusivity fosters a rich community that celebrates the intersection of cultures.
Patricia Hui's Perspective - Empathetic Understanding
Patricia defines diversity as “recognizing and appreciating the unique perspectives, background, and experiences that each person brings”. Her commitment to diversity is deeply rooted in her professional background in law, compliance, and governance. She believes that diversity is essential for fostering understanding and empathy in society.
The Role of Arts in Promoting Change
Marc believes that the arts are a powerful tool for driving social change. Art has the ability to reflect societal realities and challenge perceptions. He notes that diversity in artistic representation is crucial, as it allows for multiple narratives and perspectives to be shared. By showcasing the multifaceted nature of identity, art can promote understanding and acceptance.
Patricia adds that impactful themes for exhibitions could include intersectionality, celebrating cultural heritage, and promoting allyship. She emphasizes the importance of showcasing authentic narratives from diverse backgrounds to cultivate empathy and understanding.
Addressing Unconscious Bias
Patricia also highlights the impact of unconscious bias in our daily lives, noting that it can “skew judgment and hurt people without us realizing it - to mitigate, we should all start with self-reflection and cultivation of connections different from ourselves - strength lies in differences and not in similarities”.

Cross-Cultural Initiatives
Both Alan and Marc highlighted the significance of cross-cultural exchange. Alan's work focuses on fostering allyship within the LGBTQ+ community through sports, while Marc encourages cultural exchange through events that connect French and glocal communities in Hong Kong. For instance, their activities often include traditional French celebrations that invite locals to experience and learn about French culture firsthand.
Building Community Through Engagement
All three interviews stressed the importance of participation in fostering community. Alan, Marc, and Patricia encourage individuals to engage actively, whether through events, sports, or cultural initiatives. They believe that personal connections are vital for understanding and collaboration across diverse groups.

These interviews remind us that diversity is not just a goal but a continuous journey. Their commitment to inclusion highlights the transformative power of community engagement. As we move forward, let us embrace these principles, celebrating our differences while working together towards a more inclusive society.
