A New Literacy Project for Upper Primary Students through Photo Autobiography

FOR CORPORATE

Content Overview

This project aims to equip children aged 9-12 (Primary 4-6) with the literacy skills and confidence to narrate their own stories by leveraging multimedia tools, especially professional and digital cameras. Since many ESL learners find writing in English challenging, we aim to use visuals as a priming tool to help learners generate, visualise, and organise ideas before writing. This project is targeted at students from low-income families and marginalised groups, who often have limited access to tools and resources and hence struggle to improve their literacy skills and academic performance.

During classes, we will first show them sample work of some photo autographies and a mind map for them to generate the ideas, followed by a brief introduction to some simple photography techniques. Students will have hands-on experience on trying to use digital devices, such as digital and professional cameras, as well as tablets. As they have familiarised themselves with the basic operations of the devices, they will bring along the tools for a photo walk inside the school or in the neighbourhood and capture moments that could represent their personality and identity. Finally, they will learn to write captions for the photos and connect the ideas into a comprehensive passage.
