Content Overview
Many ESL learners often find writing in English difficult. In Hong Kong, children very often lack the chance to explore their creativity, and connect their self-identity to writings in class due to time constraints and tight schedules. The situation is made worse for vulnerable groups, especially those who come from low-income families and ethnic minority groups, as they have comparatively fewer high-quality educational resources and gain limited access to the latest digital tools - adversely affecting their academic performance and self-esteem. It might further perpetuate the cycle of poverty as their sense of helplessness creates a barrier that hinders them from asking for help and seeking out opportunities.
Little Stories envisions a future where children from different social and cultural backgrounds can all build confidence and self-identity by leveraging the use of digital photography and visual storytelling. In this photo autobiography course, children will first learn to express themselves by capturing moments that resonate with them, followed by elaborating photo captions and connecting the ideas into a full, comprehensive passage. In this classroom, children will have the chance to write creatively, express their original ideas, advocate for their dreams, with patient and supportive facilitators guiding and encouraging them throughout their journey of self-expression and self-actualisation.

Ice-breaking Session
To gain a brief understanding of different cultural backgrounds and to build stronger connections among each other, students will first get to know about the instructor, facilitators, and classmates within each group during the ice-breaking session. Then, students will learn about the structure and format of a photo autobiography with relatable examples.

Photography Workshop
The course instructor, an educator and professional photographer herself, will patiently guide students through some basic camera operations and photography techniques. Students will be assisted by the course instructor and facilitators in this hands-on learning process. Afterwards, students will have an immediate application of the knowledge by having a photo walk around the school or around the neighbourhood.

Autobiography Study Group
Based on the pictures they selected that best represent themselves, students will be guided through the writing of captions and organising a comprehensive passage with a list of learning materials, including a writing guidance sheet, a word bank, and peer- and self-check lists for proofreading and revising. Students will learn about the stories of one another within the group, which reinforces self-identity and fosters peer bonding.

" Photography is not only a skill, but also an art of expression. "
"Photography is not only a skill, but also an art of expression. Tung Tak students are very lucky to be exposed to photography for the first time through the "My Story" project, and learn how to connect with themselves, their school, family, and neighbourhood. This is a precious opportunity for them to be grounded in the present and look to the future. I hope that by understanding themselves more deeply, students can become better versions of themselves."

" I am Craig Andrew Smith, the NET at Tung Tak School. I was interested in helping my students to get involved with Little Stories as the concept of involving a photography course with English-language learning was so novel. I felt inspired as I saw my students learn the elements of photography for the first time; I even learned some new things myself! The students created their own photo-autobiography and I’m certain this will help them to develop their self-concept and sense of identity. "

"I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Little Stories for your unwavering commitment to supporting our school. Your programme has had a profound impact on our students, especially for those who are from lower-income families. Our students enjoy the photo-shooting activity and it enhances their abilities to write captions in English."
